I agree with Bob to a point. I wouldn't pick up a hitch-hiker either, but I will help people in ways that I can. Sometimes Christians don't have money to give, and have to find other ways to give. Sometimes the only thing a person has to give is prayer.
I think that the point Bob is trying to get across is better said from the Lord's words.
"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. " Matthew 7:21
In other words, many that say they are doing the Lord's work, are doing it for their own rewards and not for the Lord. Therefore they will not enter the kingdom of heaven.
And Matthew 31-46 that says whatever good deeds we do for others, we do for the Lord, and when we don't it's like we are refusing the Lord. (Please read the scripture.)
Anyway, the problem with many 'Christians' is that they have said a prayer asking for forgiveness and inviting Jesus into their lives but have neglected to seek a relationship with God and many have neglected to repent of their sins. I know this as a fact because all of my life I called myself a Christian but never knew the Lord. I knew the bible stories and sometimes I even went to church and followed the rituals and traditions. I wanted to go to heaven but wanted to enjoy life too, and made excuses of why it was okay for me to do what I wanted to. I went through two divorces, I wasn't able to conceive children, i went through a few bad relationships, bankruptcy, job loses, many other pitfalls. I couldn't understand why God would let those things happen to me. I was also around Christians a lot, I thought they were hypocrites too. Always telling me what to do, yet not always doing what they should be doing. Some people think they are Christians but are not, many are Christians but still sin. We are all sinners. Christian or not. Becoming a Christian does not make us sinless. But it is our duty to repent, and give it our all not to sin.
I wasn't listening to God. I just didn't get it. I never realized that being a Christian had to involve a two way relationship with God. I was always asking and wanting but never receiving. When I did give, I expected to receive. Now I'm not concerned whether I receive a thing, because God knows what is best and when I receive anything from him, it is a blessing. When I don't receive something I think I need, I understand that God, my Father, knows best. I am only a child, and he is my Father. That's the relationship we are to have with God if we want to be true Christians.
We only have one life here on earth, one chance. I'm going to live for God, follow His Word, tell others about Him, and in the end, make it to heaven. That's what is important.
When it comes to my past and the mistakes and hardships, I have let them go. I have forgiven and no longer hold grudges. An often overlooked but important passage in the Bible says: But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins. Matt 6:15. I no longer hold grudges against the people I used to think were hypocrites nor do I hold grudges against those who hurt me or sinned agianst me. I am still far from perfect, and still sin sometimes. God really helps me not to sin though. It's only when I want to take control, and not let God have control, when I do sin. Otherwise, when the devil comes to tempt me, and he does quite often now that I am truely saved, God helps me to fight him off and tell him NO! Whether it be anger, coveting, lust, keeping God with me at all times keeps me from sinning.
I don't even know if angelhugs is still on here but I can see her pain. She is angry at someone, maybe many someones. I pray that she will deal with her anger and not direct it at the "group". It's satan that is causing these people to sin against you. Cast your anger toward him and forgive the person that he caused to sin. Let go of the anger, the thoughts, hand it over to God and don't dwell on it any longer, then you can move on with your life.
I now have a loving husband, two beautiful children and a wonderful life. Despite being a Christian, I still enjoy life. Even more so now.(although I used to think I wouldn't if I gave it all to God.) I thought I would be giving up everything I enjoy to give my life to the Lord, but he has given me so much more. I don't have a lot of 'things' but I surely have a lot! I still struggle in life sometimes but that is part of life, everyone has struggles. Even Christians have bad things happen to them, it's what we do with them that determines if it makes us stronger or knocks us down. And even if it knocks you down, remember God will always help you back up, just ask Him.
Another thing, and I know this is getting long...there are many churches that are not serving God, seek out a church that teaches the bible, not traditions and rituals, if you go to a church and you don't feel God there, keep going until you find one where you can feel the presence of the Holy Spirit. I went to four churches locally, before I found the one I go to now. (But went to many others in my life.) Which I went to by accident (God's plan) I was going to the church next door to my church, because I heard it was a good church, but got pulled over by the police for registration on my car, which I did have, he just didnt see the sticker. Anyway, I was late and pulled into the parking lot and went to the church beside it. (I had even thought about going back home but realized that was the devil talking.) God led me to my church and I love it. I found Godly Christians who's sole purpose is living for God and bringing others to God. We have awesome ministries to the homless shelters, prisons, youth and more. I love it.
Let God lead you where He wants you to go!
