When I read about Peter, I see a man, a human being a lot like most of us. Very strong in some ways, sometimes flawed and weak but a man who believed with his whole heart in God and Jesus.
People have questioned his love of Jesus but I believe Peter loved Jesus very much.
(Matt 26: 35) Peter said unto him, Though I should die with thee, yet will I not deny thee.
He did love, he did believe, he did have faith but there were moments when he fell short.
He walked on water because of faith. He fell because his faith momentarily faltered.
When he denied knowing Jesus not once but three times, it was not because he did not love Jesus. Peter had just been through the most excrutiatingly painful experience of his life. He watched his Lord whom he loved be humiliated, tortured and killed. He knew that his life also hung in the balance. Talk about stress! He was human. When he realized what he had done, he was remorseful.
I think Acts 10:25,26 sums up who Peter was:
25And as Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet, and worshipped him.
26But Peter took him up, saying, Stand up; I myself also am a man.
