I'm currently working on an assignment and I'm looking to get some views on it if okay Very Happy ...the question we were given is this:

"Former members of the Jehovah’s witnesses group are now in your congregation. They have been taught that “from God there goes forth an invisible active force by means of which he gets his will done…called the Holy Spirit”. How would you explain to them the Biblical basis for the orthodox doctrine of the Holy sprit as a person, and the work that he does as a member of the trinity?"

What I'm stuck on is this: from my (surface) digging so far, it seems really hard to adequatly explain this (the above question) in clear terms, the current language and/or anolgies (from sytemactic theology and the like) fall far short of doing a clear explaination justice. For example - it's hard to desrcibe what we mean by person because as a "person" in the trinity, the holy spirit is not a person the same as a human being is a person. I'm stuck on language stuff here!! Can anyone one help me out?
Cheers Very Happy

The Nature of God in orthodox belief is such that He/She has Three Persons or Offices: God the Father, also called Jehovah, the God of the Jews; also designated as YHWH, He Who Must Not be Named, called Yahweh, known as the God of the Jews and Islam, also called Allah by the latter. (The Jews and the Islam take great exception to the idea that YHWH and Allah are the same God).

The Second Person is Jesus Who is the Christ, the Son of God Jehovah, Fully God and fully man, the Messiah, He Who has Come and will Come Again.

The Third Person or Office is the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Jesus that He sent in His stead after His ascension, to indwell in our hearts when we accept Jesus as our personal Lord and Savior.

Three Separate and Complete Entities, each equally God and at the same time One God Only, complete and for always.

A paradox.

Hello Praise;

My understanding with everything I have read is that there is 1 God and there is 1 Lord. There are also many references to the holy spirit. I know that the holy spirit does exist. However, I believe it is Gods spirit and not a person, angel, Lord or God. It is OF God though.

God and Jesus are two separate entities. The bible bears this out time and again. It is very clear that we are to have no other Gods before our God. Jesus is our Lord. God is our God. They are of like spirit but they are not one and the same. God and Jesus have great love and respect for one another though. The bible states that to get to the Father, you must first go through the Son and to get to the Son, you must go through the Father.

Much Luv Smile

From John 14:
Quote:
16And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

17Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

18I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

19Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.

20At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.

21He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

22Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?

23Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

I think Jesus tell us in verses 18 and 23 who the Holy Spirit is. We know the Holy Spirit was sent to fill and live in all who believe. Who does Jesus say will live in those who believe?

I think it's cool also that in verse 21, Jesus says He will reveal Himself to those who believe. How? By dwelling in us! Both He and the Father reveal themselves to us because they dwell in us.
